| This is my first year attempting to sow a cover crop and I chose Red Clover. I am going to sow it in March. Do I just scatter the seeds on the ground or do I have to actually rake them into the soil and then bury them?
What I plan to do is have the clover grow from March to mid May when I plant vegetables. |

| Token? Anybody? I want to have a successful cover crop. I want to get this right and I don't want to waste seed since it is expensive 1/4 lb was $4.50. I'm still not sure how to sow Red Clover I've heard you can just sprinkle it on the soil surface and use a ground leveler to gently press it into the top of the soil and let the snow cover it and then in spring it will come up but I would like to hear from someone who has sown cover crops already. I think I missed the fall sowing time period and will have to wait until a warm March week here in RI. I've tried to do searches for red clover and looked at topics in winter sowing but haven't found anything that answers my questions. If someone with more knowledge would be willing to respond I would greatly appreciate it. |

| Soulreaver, please do not take me the wrong way at all!! You may find more help on the seed propagation forum. What wintersowing consist of is actually where home gardeners grow in recyclable containers through the winter months. Some do direct sow like you are referring to but most of us do that with biennials and so on. So at the other forum they may be able to give you more advice. Me though I would till my area toss and press and walk away do not cover!! I would do that in late febuary to early march. Here is a link that I found for you, enjoy!! |
Here is a link that might be useful: cover crop, red clover

| Thank you daisydawnny and countrycarolyn for responding. I'm sorry if I got the wrong forum. I must of misunderstood when now that I think about it many of the topics I read in winter sowing were more about the subjects you brought up Carolyn and less about the one I was searching for an answer for. Thank you for the link Carolyn I appreciate it very much and sorry if I posted in the wrong forum. |

| No apology necessary, I think we were all there and have done that. My concern was that you were not receiving an answer. |
