I think primula, aquilegia & dicentra should all be fine. Those grow up through the driveway pavement & garage cement cracks here which suggests they're not only tough as nails, they reseed prolifically. I can't answer for the herbs--I've never grown those. I'm guessing scallions would be fine since those grow everywhere throughout my garden. Can't say who might have planted them originally but they pop up everywhere--between the daylilies, the peonies, the iris...you name it.

Thanks gardenweed,

I put out some of them and left some until tomorrow. No sense wasting seed just to rush them out the door. I'm not sure about the dill and besides, now I remember I wanted to use some newspaper pots so I could transplant those easier. I did put out the Rose and the parsley which has reseeded for me outside the past two winters. I'm waiting on the veggies too.

Thanks for the help! :-)

The dill will be just fine, especially in zone 6!!

The only one I question is the jalepeno, though I have never grew my jalepenos to see if they would reseed. So that is bout the only one I might worry about and maybe the brussels sprouts. Though I am not for sure if the brussels sprouts should be worried about either.

Dill is one of the seeds that I direct sow. Just throw some on the ground where you want it. Often in the fall I will take a dried stem with seeds and whack it on the ground if it is far from the original site. I do that with many self sowing plants.

Thanks carolyn and mnwsgal! I am surprised that Dill will self sow in zone 4, wow. I haven't grown it before, I'll put those out tomorrow. I'm going to hold on to the Brussels Sprouts for now, but tomorrow I think I am going to try some of the Halepeno Peppers, I saved some and I have a lot of them. I can put some out now and leave some for early spring and experiment a little so next year, I will know for sure.

Thanks, I got at least some of my containers out before we get that foot of snow. [g]

I believe you should sow the pepper seeds when you sow your annuals about 6-8 weeks before you want to plant them in your garden.I sow all my peppers, tomatoes at the end of feb,or first of march,LFD is April 15th here.I hunk of sow them too and have great success.

RE: Any reason NOT to sow these today?

Hi PM2, I would wait until the Spring to sow the peppers, brussel sprouts, parsley, and scallions. I do all veggies, herbs, and most annuals in early Spring (approx. early April). They don't need cold stratification so I don't see a benefit to sowing them this early.

I usually WS Dill, but agree with MNWS that it is easy to direct sow. It also reseeds abundantly. Dill usually goes to seed and peters out by mid-summer or so. Late this summer I had a little forest of baby Dill plants growing around the old plants.

Dill is a Black Swallowtail host plant, maybe you will get some caterpillars!

Well, I really want to use my jugs wisely, so I agree, why put them out now, if they will do just as well or better in early spring. I have about 3 packages of Dill and I already put a jug of it outside, so I'll put some out in the spring too. When you say Direct sow the Dill, do you mean in the Fall or in the spring?

I would love to offer something for the swallowtails. I do get butterflies but I haven't seen any cats in the garden yet. That would be fun.

Thanks moonphase and terrene!

I would say direct sow at the normal time the plant produces the seed. So that would be late summer early fall.

Fennel and Rue are a couple more herbs that are a great host food for some butterflies!!

RE: Any reason NOT to sow these today?

You could scatter the seed in early Spring - it has pretty hardy little sprouts (it's one of my earliest WS sprouters). Between that and your one jug I would think you'd have plenty. One plant of the standard sized Dill can grow 4 feet tall.

I love Dill, it has pretty and fragrant flowers, they are lovely in bouquets, and of course you can cook with it! :) If you get some Black Swallowtail cats that is a bonus. I reared BSTs for the first time this past summer. There are 2 chrysalises that did not eclose and are overwintering in the garage! I grow Dill, Fennel, Parsley, Zizia aptera, and Z. aurea for them. Got some seed for Ruta graveolens from someone on the Butterfly forum and plan to WS those too.

RE: Any reason NOT to sow these today?

That's a good rule of thumb to remember, carolyn, thanks. I'll have to remember that next fall.

Four feet is just about the height I wanted, terrene. I have been able to grow parsley from seed for the past three years and it keeps coming back. I love the airy flower heads when they bloom. I was hoping Dill would be similar. I also like the taste of Dill added to salads etc. I didn't know they were fragrant. I had a lot of Bronze Fennel and ripped most of it out. I didn't see any seedlings around the yard last year, so I'm going to start them again. I enjoy those too.

I think I read somewhere that Ruta grows well in part shade. I have a lot of part shade, so it must have been on a list I ran across. You'll have to let us know how it does for you.

It really does sound exciting to have results from your garden in the way of caterpillars etc. I really like taking a basically barren, grass and foundation shrubs, suburban garden and watching it turn into an ecological system that takes on a life of it's own. Not that I work hard at it, I don't, but just growing natives and not using chemicals does seem to make a lot of changes that are noticeable. I never saw a butterfly the first couple of years I lived here. You seem to work harder at it then I do, so I always enjoy hearing how it's all working out in your garden. :-)
