They make an excellent container for starting cuttings. Actually, I use them more for this purpose than sowing seeds. Last summer I had this rooting operation going on nearly all summer long because I am working on a problem border area, gradually removing the ugly and replacing with the pretty on a low budget. It only takes a about 3 weeks to root hardy Lantana, Turk's Cap and Salvia greggii and I now have dozens of them. If a stem breaks around here, it usually goes straight into a jug. :))

Great Plains1, I also used them for cuttings. I have a penstemon that sometimes comes back and sometimes doesn't so I took a bunch of cuttings, put them in a jug and I got a bunch more plants just in case. Worked great.
