I have a big supply of pine tree chips from the trees we took down last year. Do you think I could use these instead of soil for winter sewing?

Lisa, no, I don't think wood chips even if aged one year would make a good sowing medium. More efficient use of those would be a garden amendment (spaded in), or top dressing or mulch.

For best results witer sowing, stick with a potting medium formulated for use for plants in containers.
