The tape I use in my 'Gardeners P-Touch' is clear with black lettering (get refills at Staples), I buy regular plastic 5 or 6" plant tags in bulk and use it on those. In my Z8, I've got some things still in containers at about 4 yrs (no, not the original sowing container :)) and the tags are good as new exposed year around. I've peeled that label off after few years in fact to reuse tags....

Somewhere I read that that tape is UV resistant. It's designed to last. I've got some labels using this that are about 6 or 7 years old and they are in perfect shape.

I use p-touch labels on the metal (copper or aluminum) plant stakes that have the metal piece across the top for labeling. I coat them with spar varnish and use them in the yard and garden for permanent markers. A lot of them are at least 5 years old now and still look like new - when I clean the moss off them in the spring, that is.
