| I'm almost ready to start. I haven't been as anxious this year. It's already snowed and we've had temps in the teens many times. Very unusual. But this weekend, it'll be in the low 60s. And seeds that might have been sown too early would awaken. And I'd pretend not to coddle them all winter long. No thanks. I'm being patient. Cause I've done this a time or two.
50 containers. That's my limit. Of course that doesn't apply to my vegetable garden. Just my flowers. Yes, I cheat. |

I've got 82 containers that say you'll break 50 but if you stick to it, more power to you. I did nearly 500 last year and gave away probably that many hundreds of dollars of perennials. This year I'll do less but they're all mine. I've got an acre to fill and most if not all will be planted right here. So, whatcha growin in those 50 containers? |

| Well stranger I been wondering where you been hiding. I hope all things are good for you!! The winterswap got taken care of but I can't say it was smooth sailing, I made some errors. Though everyone was extremely patient with me. Next year I hope everything is settled your way cause I tell you what my hat goes off to you for what you do for the swap each and every year!! Our weather here is suppose to be in the 60's also this weekend. The day before yesterday was a high of 28. I totally agree the dropping in the teens and single digits is not normal for this time of the year. I only have sowed things that need to be stratified as of right now. So I am crossing my fingers that everything will be a ok. I am curious since you have limited yourself to 50 does that mean 50 flowers, 50 veggies, 50 shrubs, 50 trees?? LOL just picking on you. |

| Tom, remember I set my goal at 36 milk jugs this year? Well, I gathered my 36 jugs and as luck would have it, I went to take some clothing donations to our hospital Thrift shop and there were 2 milk crates outside. Usually anything that is setting outside will usually go into the dumpster at end of day, so I asked one of the men what they were going to do with the milk crates and he said you can have them for $1 each. SOLD! He didn't have to wait for me to make a decision as I'd paid $1.91 at Value Village store last Jan. so I knew that was a bargain. I find out this week or maybe it was last week that I'd got ahead of myself and somehow numbered two crates the same numbers 1-9..so I can't let those go to waste. I'd even put a foil tape label on the outside as to where the seeds came from..I have to figure out how to use those duplicate milk jugs in that crate. Maybe I can just add a letter of the alphabet to one set of 9..Hmm! maybe not a bad idea. or leave them to plant my own collected seeds from my plants and my neighbors..Okay, I may have solved my problem right here while typing this message. |
Just a few more days to go
| | |
| I've been cutting my milk jugs the last two evenings and I think I only have about 5 more to go. My foil tape has been cut(36 pieces)so will have to cut some more for the addition jugs..I hope to start planting next week. Christmas decorations are back in the garage rafters, put away for another year. I'm having my two sisters for pork and Sauerkraut for NY's Day so am concentrating on that and once that is over, I can turn my attention to putting potting mix and flower seeds in those milk jugs and putting them out in the cold, cruel world. |

| Tom, we're having such similar weather. This is the first year I've ws in early December to take advantage of the cold! I'm still waiting to get more catalogs so I can order some more seeds, and awaiting my seeds from Canada! |

| Hey there Tom! Ready ...set ...go! I am not setting a limit this year...I need some serious Wintersowing to balance my insane life. Glad to see you pop in. |

| Got everything ready to go and will start next week once we get all the garland, lights and Christmas decorations off the front and side porches and have room to set up shelving for the containers and seed flats. Have been going through seed catalogs and have a lot of seed we collected from our gardens last year. We plan to stick with tough, drought tolerant plants this year - lots of salvias, amaranthus, celosia, the various rudbeckias. Of course that can all change since I have never seen a seed packet that didn't have my name all over it :D ..... Lynne |
RE: Seed catalogs
| | |
| Have you noticed how many seed catalogs you are receiving now? I guess I must be on somebody's mailing list because I'm getting some from companies that I've never heard of before. I've noticed the prices for seeds have jumped, like everything else since last year, Will make sure I take advantage of seed sales this summer, that's for sure and load up for the next wintersowing season. For newbies, I have recently ordered from Crosmanseeds.com and they have 1950 prices for all their seed pkts. then there is T's flowers and Things and Sample Seed Shop which are both great private sources with very reasonable prices and great customer service. |

| Token, good to see you back on the boards! How's the house selling going? Hopefully you'll find someone who loves what you've done and can learn about this crazy/fun WSing process too. I agree that I don't see you sticking with the 50 containers either, but who am I to give you a hard time when I have a hard time staying under 200 containers. This year I think I'll DS more of the annuals and focus on the perennials so making that under 200 container limit might be easier. Happy New Year to all the WSers on here! Ann |
RE: Let's Get It On.

| This newbie will have 54 jug/containers for now. |

| Hi Token, it was nice to see your post...your photos of your wonderful garden were so inspiring to me last year during my first year winter sowing. Last year I sowed 100 containers, but this year I hope to limit myself to 50 too. Lol, we'll see if that actually happens. Right now I only have four jugs out there that I sowed on the Winter Solstice... Thanks again for the inspiring photos! -topie |

| on 12/30/2010 I sowed 14(1/2 gal. milk jugs. They were Rudbeckia/Black-eye susans, liatris, Shasta daisey, coneflower, and marigolds. I had intented to sow more today but my computer tech bought my hard drive back so I'm playing catch up on correspondence and seeing what he didn't install that I had on before. He didn't install my favorites/bookmarks but that's easy to redo myself whenever I have the time. |

| "50 containers. That's my limit. Of course that doesn't apply to my vegetable garden" Its OK, Token, Ive got a big ole dumptruck lined up for all the cow manure that came off of that "next year's im doing less containers" thread from a few months back. |
