I can't say anything for the phlox but I have grown all kinds of lychnis..The only lychnis I got first year blooms from my vesuvious and they were beautiful.

WS Lychnis chalcedonica/Maltese cross bloomed second year for me as did Lychnis coronaria/rose campion. I WS Phlox paniculata/tall garden phlox last year but they haven't bloomed yet. Both types of lychnis are self-seeders so they're excellent WS candidates. I've read that rose campion is a short-lived perennial but since it self-seeds, may appear to be longer lived. I didn't take a chance so I harvested seeds to WS this time. I won't be without it from here on after seeing the gorgeous silver-gray, velvety foliage stay that way the whole season. Other than harvesting seeds, it got zero attention (besides admiration) from me.

Good Morning Rose!
I did garden phlox last year and it bloomed from early summer until mid December (it was unseasonably warm and we didn't get our first real cold weather until then).

It is an annual, aka as creeping phlox or garden phlox (10"-15"). I am going to try and put a pic, but not sure if I remember exactly how, so there is a link below of the pic in early summer with the first blooms. {{gwi:459034}}From New Folder

I did it late February and early March. I am going to do some this year in January, as well as later. I have heard they will do fine, but I did do mine closer to March and the first of March!
