| I decided to make a tutorial about how I winter sow for a friend on flickr. It's not finished but I thought it might be useful or interesting so here it is so far.

| Thanks for posting this! I am glad to see it is OK to use cups. I also think I'd rather use baggies like you have than cling wrap, which is really difficult to get taped down. :) |
RE: My pictorial tutorial
| | |
| One of the reasons I didn't get pics of me making the drainage holes is that these cups hold up to the weather quite well and I'm using the same ones I did last year. I also sometimes use any kind of clear plastic, even bread bags work great and use a heat gun to vacuum wrap them then make holes. Duct tape works just as well though. |

| Today I added a few of my pics from last year showing sprouts, true leaves and HOS planted out. Also a few blooming pics later in the year. |

| Very good informational show. Thanks! |

| I need to take some pics of me doing drainage holes in the cups and cutting and preparing a few other types of containers I think. Still I'm pleased with my first attempt. I keep wanting to add more info than I have but I need to figure out how or just link it back here to the FAQ's. |

| I added some pics that show my various containers attempts and the heavy snow I was dealing with last year. Also some tiny sprouts to fill in the gap between my other pics. I really must find my awl and get those drainage hole making shots now, lol. :) |

That was really great Flood! Now I think I will try some cups this year too. It looks like less work than preping jugs (although I love my jugs) and would be so much less storage space to keep those cups stacked up rather than having bags and boxes full of bottles and jugs stashed everywhere. I have them everywhere. Thank you. Now I just gotta find some cups. |

| I'm glad it was helpful gardencrazy. I am surprised and pleased by all the views I am getting on these pics. I was hoping they would be useful and am thrilled to see them getting checked out. P.S. I added a few more pics to show how I prep my Chinese takeout containers today. Both my cups and the take out containers worked so well last year and I saved them and am reusing them this year too. It really takes a lot of the extra prep work out to have them ready and at hand. |

I sent your link to 3 co-workers that are sort of thinking about trying ws. Maybe this will push them on over the fence! It is a very good visual. I have styrofoam cups that I used for tomatoe plants last year. They already have drainage holes. duh! Why didn't I think of that sooner. Thanks again Flood. Glenna |

That is wonderful I hope it helps them take the plunge. It's a lovely fall after all. I decided to make this slideshow for my friend because she has young kids and I thought they would enjoy doing it together. I can't wait till they see it. I sent them seeds last year for their garden and she said they loved planting them. I am hoping they enjoy the seeds I sent this year too. |

| Hey Flood! It worked. One co-worker said she thought the cup thing looked easier and she came in to work on Monday moring and said she sowed 47 containers over the weekend! I feel like a proud parent! So I guess you are the co-parent! LOL Glenna |

Wahoo, that is so exciting. I can't wait to tell my husband. The snow stopped falling today so I trudged out to my garage and brought in some of my two liters. I got thirteen done today. I have more cups to go though. Some have soil and the rest need prepped. Thanks for sharing Gardencrazy, that made my night. :) Maybe I will hit up the garage tomorrow too and get some more containers done. |

| floodthelast, you did a good job with that. Cute kitty ;-). Guess I'll burn some smaller holes in my lids and good to see the cheaper baggies work the way you push them way down. It didn't look like you taped them. I was afraid they would blow off. Maybe I will go the baggies route entirely if my lids break up. Sure beautiful pictures at the end. Never heard of Tithonia until I saw it here so got some. Good job! |

| Thanks for bumping this up, gardencrazy! I'm finding ws'ing is a leap of faith. It feels just crazy to plant and water brandy new little seeds and then stick 'em out in the snow! I got 33 soda bottles done with my kids this afternoon, and now they're outside, all covered with snow, and I'm here looking at pictures, reassuring myself and the kids that the little seeds will be just fine. (we're keeping our fingers crossed still, just to be safe! :) lol) Carol |

| This is my 4th year, and I still enjoy seeing how other folks do it. Love the Tithonis picture at the end ... and the kitty too! Thanks for sharing, floodthelast! Bonnie |

Sorry the link isn't working for everyone. I did email you another link velsgarden. Thanks for all the complements. I love the tithonia too. Yes I don't tape down the plastic baggies, it stretches as you pull it over the top and that really holds it on. Twelve inches of snow didn't cave those cheap baggies in. :) Here's another link that goes to the slideshow if you want that option. http://www.flickr.com/photos/28903418@N00/sets/72157623054085036/ |

| photos are great! love the sunflowers and barn- barns are some of my favs... I w/s in Solo cups and I found some strofoam cups that are recyclable too! have been w/s since 2001- I use a 'nut pick' to punch holes in the cups and the plastic wrap I put on top- I use a pony tail rubber band to hold on the wrap... my garden is small so these cups give me plenty of plants- thanks for sharing- photos always help happy sowing! A nut pick huh, that's brilliant. I love seeing the different things ppl use to sow. I have a pretty small yard too with lots of different pickles like all shade, bad drainage then all sun etc. Winter sowing has opened up a whole world of plants to me that I never knew existed. Now I can attack my trouble areas en masse. :) It occurred to me yesterday that this year I might get my first blooming perennials and I can't wait to take pics and add them to my little slideshow. I am thrilled that it is helpful and can't believe the number of hits I'm getting on the pics. You guys bumped me from 17 in a day to 700 the next, lol.

That was a great tutorial. Thanks for taking the time to put it together. Also a great way to recycle! Mary |
RE: My pictorial tutorial

| Thanks so much for posting these pictures- They are really encouraging! Do you have some of the plastic cups lined up in paper boxes? or are those plastic? |
RE: My pictorial tutorial
| | |
I like to line my cups in plastic bins, milk crates and the nursery trays for cell packs just for the support. I have a medium sized dog that likes to leap over my sowing supplies outside and knock them down so that helps. I did try cardboard boxes at one point but after awhile they really get soggy and just fall apart so no more of that. I also put my cups in the big five gallon nursery bins which I use every year for container planting later on.
