Question on remedies for over sowing

I must admit my first 71 pots were probably over-sowed. Will I be alright if I thin them out quickly in the Spring, should they all really do well.
I'm bound and determined to stop this bad habit and have more faith in the process.
Thx,
Micki

Micki,

I have a heavy hand when sowing seeds. I have never thinned them out. I plant hos (hunk o seedlings) style and end up with beautiful clumps of whatever I started.

I use 16oz styrofoam cups most of the time and break them into 3 clumps when I finally plant out, never had a problem! These babies are tough as nails.

I was a little too enthusiastic sowing as well--it's hard not to be when seeds are plentiful. Don't worry about thinning--generally folks just let Mother Nature do it for them so only the strongest survive. Ditto Lisa's comment: they're tough as nails.

It's too early to worry about it anyway :) If you do find pots are too crowded with seedlings that are not tough enough to take the root competition before you are ready to plant out - simplify, thin with scissors rather than try to pull and few and disturb the roots of all. I tend to plant out later than many here, and while I'm better at not over sowing than I used to be I still don't always get it right. A few well directed snips takes care of any potential problems.

OK I'll chalk it up to experience and rest easy for now.

I've actually be placing my seeds now when ever possible. I sowed 3 jugs with 21 seeds each of Hosta.

I am now getting 2, 3 and 4 jugs out of a seed packet than 1. I'm up to 101 jugs as of yesterday.

Thank you for your encouragement and experience,
Micki

Ditto everyone else. HOS takes care of itself.

The only thing I think I've ever thinned were sunflowers. Otherwise, it's HOS or bust. I just grab a hunk or chunk from my flats, and in the ground they go.

Good luck!!!
