Aquilegia sp. possibly A canadensis and Kalmia latifolia. Neither is a house plant. If you need more ids in future the Name That Plant Forum is very busy and there are lots of people there who know US plants very well.

Flora is correct..the first one is Aquilegia. It's common name is Columbine. I have never seen the second one before, but I like it!

I like it too, searched, several sources say it's drought tolerant, native to southeastern US but hardy to Z4, evergreen, mostly shade.

Wiki: Mountain-laurel is the state flower of Connecticut and Pennsylvania, blooms May / June. Numerous cultivars have been selected with varying flower color.

Kalmia, where have you been all of my life? I'd love to have some of these with the Hydrangeas. Assuming since it says you're in NYC you have these in pots?
