Google "care of poinsettias after Christmas" if you want to try to maintain it. Lots of trouble to go to...

And for heaven's sake -- find a new nursery!! If that one did not know what this ubiquitous holiday plant is, TRUST THEM WITH NOTHING!!

I hope they had it in a discard pile for composting. It's all splayed out because it's past i's prime for display. The cyathia do that when they're at full floral maturity, and it's broken off as well. You just got the stub of what was once a nice, fully branched out plant. Yes, you can keep it alive and can keep it pinched off to a houseplant size, but if you do manage to do it, the stem gets fatter and woodier each year and it's a hassle. The leaves usually all drop off and start again, and it can be put outside come frost free weather, but you'll have to take it in each year when it gets cold. If you want to do it for a lark, just out of curiosity and see if you can make it beautiful and full and bloom again, you can. 'how to' is all over the internet. Trust me, if you do it once and succeed, you'll probably never do it again. LOL.

If you are a casual plant person you likely will not want to play with it. It would need better soil, perhaps a smaller pot, gradually put in full sun in summer and brought in in September to start its special light treatment.
